Art and Design

“Mount House is a school that inspires creative expression and imagination and where individual characters are embraced.”

Mount House is rightly proud of its fantastic reputation in the Arts. Creativity is essential in today’s world of rapid change, global competition, and digital communication. Mount House excels at motivating students to look at the world from different perspectives to challenge received wisdom and to generate ideas.

We study artwork created from different periods in history and cultures considering historical context and drawing comparisons with our present lives.

We are on the doorstep of one of the biggest cultural cities in the world, with amazing museums and galleries, but our beautiful school grounds in a semi-rural setting are equally inspiring.

We support students’ learning of new creative skills and artistic techniques to improve their creative output and develop their individual style. We have small class sizes, and this allows us to give the students the freedom to be more ambitious with their ideas. Fine Art, Photography and Textiles are all studied to GCSE and A’ Level. We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements.

Ultimately, the creative arts are to do with having lots of fun, experimenting with different materials and techniques, and just seeing what happens.

Art and Design Clubs

There are always opportunities for participating in the creative arts outside of academic studies. Work is created for House competitions and in cross-curricular projects with Drama and English departments where the creative arts play a big part.

In the art and design clubs, students can develop their skills and interests using a range of different drawing and painting media, photography and textiles techniques.

Creative Corner club provides opportunities to create pieces of art work using a whole range of materials: oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolours, charcoal, pencil, clay, mod roc, textiles…the list goes on. A chance to work on a larger scale than in art lessons, to learn new skills and to have fun.

Go Create club is an opportunity to create beautiful and unusual digital images. You can try out lots of new and old techniques, taking photos with the school’s SLR cameras and your mobile phone. Using photoshop, you can learn how to edit your photos, combine images and apply filters and effects. There will also be an opportunity for students to work on GCSE and A level pieces of work in Art and Photography.

Mount House also participates in the annual ISA Art competitions and has achieved a number of commendations both at local and national level.
