Gone are the days when a school Careers Department (if there was one) consisted of a list offering just a handful of options. Nowadays everything is possible – from architect to zoologist!
At Mount House careers education is introduced via the PSCHE programme in Year 7 and 8, with increasing focus from Year 9. There are many links between the careers and other school departments as we find it effective to integrate careers guidance early.
Although most students go on to university, they have access to a wide range of relevant, up-to-date information about all the possibilities available to them after leaving. We help them decide which options to pursue, which qualifications they need and how to take first steps towards their chosen careers.
The school is a member of Inspiring Futures and we use their effective Futurewise programme, a planning and advisory service for 15-23 year olds.
All Year 10 Pupils (unless parents opt out) sit the Morrisby Profile psychometric test in June and the Inspiring Futures team lead a feedback session at the start of Year 11. Members of the Inspiring Futures team follow this up with individual interviews to explore possible career paths.
The Careers Department holds an annual Careers Convention in the summer term where teachers, business world contacts and willing parents help Year 10 and Sixth Form pupils with possible career choices. Upper Sixth students also receive a great deal of support with mock university interviews.
The department has strong links with organisations willing to take students on work experience and we expect all Year 11 pupils to do a week’s placement after their GCSEs or possibly during the Lower Sixth year.
Each June some lucky pupils and students get the chance to mingle with political and business leaders, entrepreneurs and champions of change at the exciting Women of the Future Summit. We actively nurture connections with many people and organisations who can offer advice, inspiration and opportunities for our students.
Whatever their year, we’re always here to help students and actively guide them in the most appropriate direction. So, architect or zoologist, or anything in between – the sky’s the limit!
We’ve put together some handy info sheets notes to help with post-school planning.
